Featuring the cookies, cakes and breads modeled in “The Year of the Jewish Woman” Calendar.

This calendar was partially inspired by my love of Jewish desserts. When I was younger, my Nana managed a bakery in Miami Beach called “Kosher Treats.” My fondest memories are visiting her at the bakery and eating all the delicious cookies.

Here are my favorite treats...

Cookies

Rainbow Sprinkle Cookie:
These are my childhood favorite. Aren’t they beautiful?

Chocolate Sprinkle Cookie:
If they’re out of Rainbow Sprinkle, I’ll totally take these!

Chinese Cookie:
These are my sister’s favorite. They have a dollop of fudge in the middle.

Linzer Tarts:
Raspberry-filled sugar cookies.

Featured in November!

Hamantashen:
My new adult love. I love this cookie! I don’t want to think about all the butter it’s made with, because it is soooo good! They come in raspberry, apricot, poppy and prune.

Featured in March!

Macaroons:
I developed a late-in-life love of macaroons. They are sticky, sweet, coconut flavored, and the perfect Passover treat. They are especially good when they are dipped in chocolate.

Black and White Cookie:
Heaven on Earth! I love black and white cookies. They combine my two favorite treats: cake and cookies. Growing up in the Boston area we called them “half-moons.”

Featured in October!

Rugelach:
A wonderful, flakey cookie often enjoyed during Hanukkah. You can find rugelach in a variety of flavors, but my favorite is cinnamon with raisins!

Coming in 2010 calendar!

Mandel Bread:
A cookie that is similar to biscotti, but softer. They come in a variety of flavors, but my favorite is chocolate chip. These are great with a morning cup of coffee!

Cakes & Breads

Cinnamon Babka:
Jewish coffee cake. This spongy cake that originated in Eastern Europe can be filled with chocolate or cinnamon. It is usually topped with streusel.

Checkerboard Cake:
Is that not gorgeous? How do they make that? This chocolate and vanilla cake with chocolate frosting is wonderful!

Marble Loaf/Cake:
We have a lot of “loafs” in Jewish food. I love a good chocolate-vanilla cake with rich chocolate frosting.

Honey Cake:
A popular dessert enjoyed during Rosh Hashanah to celebrate the sweetness to come in the New Year.

Challah Rolls:
My best memories involve these baby challah rolls. My Nana made tuna fish sandwiches on these rolls for our lunch at the beach in Florida. Wait to see what I do with them in the calendar... you’ll never think of tuna the same way!

Challah:
Last, but surely not least, is challah! Challah is braided bread eaten during Shabbat. Two loaves of challah are used during Shabbat and holiday meals for the blessing. Challah also makes awesome French toast!
